Broad Function

The Technical Services Engineer (TSE) provides technical expertise and support for the Electrocoagulation (EC) Water Treatment Technology Team.  The TSE will be responsible for set-up, commissioning/startup, field operation and troubleshooting of the EC system and related services which includes electrocoagulation, filtration and tank solid separation equipment.  This role serves as a key member of the EC Water Treatment Technology Team and takes direction from the Director of Engineering, Water Treatment Technology or Director of Operations, Water Treatment Technology.    

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to the strictest safety procedures and make recommendations for improvements when necessary.

  • Responsible for the mobilization, startup, ongoing operations, and demobilization of the Water Treatment equipment at customer location

  • Perform equipment trial runs, investigate tests, repairs and overhauls equipment and systems

  • Responsible for field operation of the EC units and other water treatment systems at customer locations to meet specific operational goals including system maintenance.

  • Troubleshoot system operation and perform corrective actions as needed including equipment repair in the field.Give feedback on problem evaluation and develop and communicate resolution.

  • Address service and warranty issues is order to trouble shoot and correct problems within a time frame that maintains satisfied customers.

  • Evaluate system performance and efficiency while considering and promoting future sales opportunities.

  • Apply engineering theory, practices, and principles to conduct root cause failure analysis investigations of equipment by working closely with manufacturing, branch personnel and vendors to understand failure modes and effects and develop mitigation plans.

  • Work closely with customer to insure key objectives are met and services are performed as specified in the project scope of work.

  • Monitor water quality parameters, read and record technical data for system operations as required for each project.

  • Analysis of current water treatment technology product line products/systems and recommend improvements.

  • New product research/analysis/recommendations for possible inclusion into Baker’s fleet of product offerings.

  • Development and design input for newwater treatment related equipment (rental and non-rental)

  • Answer technical questions from field personnel (Sales and Operations) related to EC and water treatment equipment and any other technical questions in general.

  • Provide and review equipment specifications when required and update as needed.

  • Provide technical information updates to department management for inclusion onto the intranet web site.

  • Assist branch sales representatives and Product Managers with applications analysis.

  • Analyze equipment trends, historical data, and field data to develop preventive maintenance programs that will improve the reliability of our water treatment equipment.

  • Provide technical information and/or calculations (e.g. water quality) as needed.

  • Propose and coordinate design improvements to resolve repeated problems.

  • Maintain expeditious handling and resolution of customer inquiries and complaints.

  • Metrics development and analysis to improve equipment reliability.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide support on various Water Treatment Technology projects as needed.

  • Support other internal customers (such as the Marketing and Operations) on an as needed basis.

  • Develop and produce engineering and manufacturing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).

  • Work very closely with the EC product line leadership to resolve problems with existing equipment and develop new EC products for the rental fleet.

  • Maintain knowledge of current industry practices related to water treatment technology equipment design, maintenance, troubleshooting and operation. Identify and assess new technologies related to water treatment technology equipment and auxiliary systems.

Working Conditions

  • Working conditions include outdoor and indoor field, yard and shop locations. Working on uneven ground and near various types of equipment in all types of weather. Working underneath equipment. Exposure to the outdoors, extreme weather conditions, dirt, and fumes. Utilization of Personal Protective Equipment is necessary

  • Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects

  • 70% to 85% travel for extended periods of time across the US

  • 12 hour shifts, hours are as needed for each job

Skills and Abilities

  • Essential function of mechanical systems and equipment troubleshooting. 

  • Must be able to read and understand blueprints for layout and have basic mechanical skills that is typically acquired either through school, related coursework, or previous experience

  • Working knowledge of water treatment systems and water chemistry are beneficial  

  • Should have basic understanding of electrical and mechanical systems

  • Hands-on & field oriented

  • Working knowledge of electro-precipitation, chemical-precipitation, water treatment, & separation technologies a plus

  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Experience with Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) methodologies and application to problem solving.

  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.

  • Self-starter who can set goals and organize own work.

  • Able to wear and use personnel protective equipment.


  • B.S. degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electro-Chemistry or Industrial Engineering or in Engineering Technology preferred, or equivalent direct experience

Experience & Other

  • Experience with AutoCAD is required; AutoCAD Mechanical, Mechanical Desktop and Inventor (including Finite Element Analysis) are a plus.
  • In addition, experience with electrical control systems and PLC's are also beneficial.
  • Experience with operation of water treatment systems beneficial.
  • Knowledge and experience in the Oil & Gas field a plus.
